Loooooooong Overdue

I have to admit- I had pretty much quit posting here because I didn't think anyone was reading it. (It's hard to be motivated when no one's paying attention). But, I was wrong... Amy and Ron are still reading and want an update!!

Life is good! It's pretty cliche', but SO true! I LOVE being married!!! My fabulous husband surprised me with a trip to New York for Christmas. I've always wanted to see NYC at Christmas, and it was every bit as magical as I dreamed it would be! We saw all the classic sights, but my favorite was definitely The Lion King on Broadway. WOW!
My Top 5: 1.Minskoff Theater (Lion King), 2.Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill, 3.Rockefellar Center Christmas Tree, 4.Times Square, 5.Tiffany's on 5th Avenue (of course!)
We had a great time exploring with our good friends Melissa & Lyle... now I just can't wait to go back!
Our first Christmas as husband & wife was just as wonderful! I got a new Bible with my new name on it, and Rob got a remote controlled helicopter- we were both excited! We spent the weekend with my family in New Orleans- the first time we've all been there together since May 2006- and flew back to Nashville on Christmas day and got to see Rob's family that night. I don't think I could have asked for it to be any better.
As much as I'd love to write a book here and tell you all the fun details of the past few months and our dreams for 2008, I can't- Rob's been out of town all weekend and he just got home!

A Month, A Week, & A Day

Yep- that's how long Rob and I have been married! Time flies when you're having fun! We moved into an apartment this past Monday, and have spent most of our evenings this past week trying to find places for all our boxes. We finally got everything we're not using right now into the extra bedroom in an arrangement where we can close the door and not think about it every day! My goal is to go through all those boxes over the course of the next six months while we're here... neither of us packed very well (since we thought our stuff would only be in boxes for a couple of weeks) and very few boxes are labeled. Eventually it will all get sifted and sorted, but for tonight, we're just relaxing! Fortunately we've been able to keep a positive outlook- as we sat eating pizza Monday night surrounded by boxes on all sides, Rob joked, "This is what it's supposed to be like when you first get married!" He even told his brothers they could come over and "play fort" around all the boxes!! It was a great feeling, though, to be able to finally cook my first meal for my husband in OUR home! It wasn't that spectacular, but we're home, and THAT is wonderful!
It's good to have an address. And even better having a spouse to share the struggles with! In spite of all the obstacles we've faced in these first weeks of marriage, it's so great!!!! I wouldn't trade my life for anything. God is still in control, He's providing for all our needs, and we're grateful.
You have filed my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound. I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4: 7-8

On the road again...

Ok- I mostly want to post this here, and hope that I won't have to tell this story a thousand times. As of about 7:30 last night, Rob and I are officially homeless!
Here's the cliff notes version of the story of our house...
We found a house that seemed like it would become our dream home in a neighborhood that we loved back in June (refer back to previous post). The seller's agent assured us that it would be completed by Aug. 17 so that we could move our things in before our wedding on Sept. 1. All paperwork, including the loan, had to processed with my maiden name. A week before our scheduled closing, they called and said the house wouldn't be ready until Aug 31. I freaked out, but we signed the extension and begged them to get it done sooner. Three days before our wedding, the loan officer called and told me we may lose the loan, because my name and marital status were about to change, and we had to be considered as a married couple which would change the structure of our loan. The house still wasn't ready, had to sign another extension. Got married, had a great honeymoon, came back to stay with family for we hoped just a few days. Went back to the mortgage company to revise the paperwork, were asked to lie on the form, we refused; were offered a different loan at a much higher rate, we refused and asked for the disqualification paperwork to be released from the house contract. We filed all the required papers, and the builder denied our request anyway- essentially trying to force us into a loan we didn't like to buy the house we no longer wanted. We had to sign yet ANOTHER extension for the closing date. We consulted a lawyer and decided we didn't want to go to court but would just buy the house and make the best of the situation. After six weeks of waiting and living out of suitcases, every weekend hoping we would move, we finally went to our walk through and inspected the house thoroughly. We gave them our punch list, which the crew worked feverishly on the next day so that we could close at 4:00. Our realtor stopped at the builder's office on the way to the closing and was told "Everything is good to go." Arrived at the closing, where the title company lawyer informed us that based on our punch list, the seller felt like they could never make us happy and they refused to close on the house. I'M NOT KIDDING!!!! After all they drug us and our realtor through, they wanted us to smile and shake hands and walk away friends. It was quite a roller coaster of emotions... not the fun roller coaster that you want to ride over and over, but the old, jerky one that gives you whiplash and makes you nauseous... anger, frustration, hurt, anger. Relief was the feeling that finally settled over us. We can't help but believe that God has protected us from something- either a problem with the house, or a problem with the unethical characters we had to deal with- and we trust that He will provide a better home for us soon. We're anxious to settle in someplace, even if it's just a temporary apartment, and we hope to have that worked out in the next couple of days. We don't fully understand why we had to travel this road, but we're grateful that we reached our destination (even though it's not where we thought we were going!)Praise God from whom all blessings flow, and if you ever hear someone talking about buying a house from Prestige homes, tell them to run far away!!!

A Quick word from Mrs. Dixon...

I know, I know- inquiring minds want to know!! Married life is INCREDIBLE!! I LOVE IT!!!! I'm sure that I have the best husband ever!

We're still living like nomads (ie: homeless!) The house of our dreams that we put a contract on back in June is still not ready, and has really become sort of a nightmare. Maybe one day soon I'll be able to post the whole story here, but not yet. At this point, I'm hoping we can move in before Thanksgiving, but for the record, I'd walk away without looking back if we had the opportunity. Pray for us to have a right mindset as we deal with some pretty shrewd characters.

With that exception, I'm loving my life right now!! I told Rob this morning that 6-6:30am is quickly becoming my favorite time of day... The alarm first goes off at 6, and then we snooze for a little while until I absolutely have to get in the shower. When that buzzer first wakes me, I'm reminded that he's there with me, and I usually snuggle up in the crook of his shoulder. We don't say anything, it's just laying there with him that makes me happy. I'm safe, and comfortable, and loved. God is so good to me!

WOW!

It's 6:30am on September 1, 2007... I can't sleep. I'm getting married in a few hours! The rehearsal was a lot of fun, the rehearsal dinner was even better, and now all I have left to do is wait. Why in the world did we schedule this wedding at 3:00?!
I am going to marry the most incredible man I know. He is compassionate, funny, hard-working, loving, generous, kind, and best of all- he loves me! I cannot wait to be his wife!
If you read this today, please pray for me- patience is not a virtue of mine...

In the words of Dolly Parton, and one of my current favorite songs, "He knows a lot about love & stuff, AND HE'S GONNA MARRY ME!"

Checking In

So, things have gotten a little busy and I'm not updating the blog as much as I intended. Sorry! 27 days left, and almost as many things to do before Sept 1!! Truly, though, the things left really feel like minor details, and Rob & I will get married with or without them.
The house is coming along; we've had to toss our "let's only go by once a week" rule now that the progress is advancing almost daily. It looks like all the "construction" part is about done, and it's just the finishing left. I say that, and then remember that they've still got to pour the driveway, so I guess that's construction. We're getting close anyway!
Please keep us in your prayers, asking God that we won't get stressed or side-tracked during these last three weeks of our engagement. Not that we're at that point now- I just don't want to go there at all! Pray for Rob- he had to move out of his apartment last week, and is now living out of a suitcase until the house is ready, and that's already old. For me- pray that I'll be productive with my time, and patient as I wait. God has gifted us with a deep love for one another that we are extremely thankful to have; pray that our love will continue to grow every day. (Our pastor has teased us that we're going to have to make up a fight before our next counseling session- we're too easy!)
Have I said lately that I'm the luckiest girl in the world?

Engagement pics

Sorry it's taken me a while to get these posted!!! There were so many good ones that I was trying to figure out how to get a whole album on here... I never did! So here are some of our favorites!

Our wedding plans are all being finalized... 36 days to go! I can't wait!!!

This Week...

The days are flying by lately, and taking forever all at the same time! The wedding countdown is on- 56 to go!! This week was a pretty good one- I'm definitely in favor of having every Wednesday off.
Tuesday evening Rob & I went to Centennial Park to have some engagement pictures taken. We were excited to have found an aspiring photographer's ad on Craig's List stating that he was looking for people who were willing to let him use their photos in his portfolio in exchange for free pictures. He did a great job, and I think we'll have some really good pictures to show in a few weeks! And they were free! (If you're not familiar with Craig's List- let me know, I'd be happy to introduce you)
Then on Thursday, Rob called me at work to tell me that he found a lawnmower (again, thanks Craig) that he wanted to go check out. It was the same kind of mower that's used to cut golf courses, and someone was selling a used one. When we went to meet the owner, it came up that he & his family were selling off all their stuff because they're about to move to India as international missionaries! Of course, I told him that Rob & I had met overseas, and his wife came out and we had a really neat visit sharing some of our experiences with them. It's such a small world- I love how God brought that chance meeting together with a used lawnmower!
Funniest moment of the week... Monday evening, my friend Rachel and I were going somewhere when we passed two guys pan-handling on the side of the road. Their sign read: Family killed by ninjas. Need money for kung fu lessons to seek revenge. We didn't give them money, but they get big points for creativity!

Details

Ok, apparently I haven't been giving enough details here, so I'll try to do better!

Rob & I are getting married at 3:00 on Saturday, Sept 1, at Grace Community Church in Nashville (where we're members). Grace is special to us because we were first introduced to the church back in 2002 when they sent their pastor and a team of volunteers to Croatia to minister to the missionaries of Central & Eastern Europe. We both loved the church then, and were excited to participate in this body when Rob relocated back to Nashville last fall. We're each having two attendants- his two brothers and my two sisters, and both of our mentors will take part in officiating the ceremony. My dress is-- yeah right! Like I'd give THAT much detail here!! Oh yeah- colors are black & white, with purple flowers. As much as I love pink, purple has been my favorite as long as I can remember.

As for the house, we're WAY excited! On Saturday, we got to choose most of the details of our new home... bricks & vinyl, flooring, cabinets, countertops, lighting- the works! It was so fun!! And contrary to what everyone told us- it was a fairly painless, fun afternoon! We laid out all the carpet samples- he tossed one out, I tossed one, him, me, until we got it down to three, and then we easily agreed on the middle shade that was left. I'm so happy that we get along so well and have such similar tastes!

We're back to doing the distance thing again this week. Rob left today for the Servpro national convention in Palm Springs. I miss him already, so I guess it's good that we already know how to handle being apart! Friday seems so far away right now!!!

My goal for the week while he's away: respond to all the emails I've been neglecting this past month. Being engaged is so busy and so much fun that I've become an even worse emailer than I already was! I promise, I'll catch up- please don't give up on me!

Come visit soon!

Big Day

What a Thursday! Rob & I booked flights for our honeymoon in Savannah, GA, and chose a hotel. When Rob called to make those reservations, the price the woman gave him was about $30 more per night than what he found on the internet, so she hooked us up with a good deal! We're excited about going to a new city that neither of us has ever been to. Now we've just got to figure out what we're going to do there!
AND, our other big news of the day---- we put a contract on a house!! It's started, but currently is just a "slab and studs". The cool thing about that is we'll get to pick everything- from the bricks to the countertops! It's a very exciting, very overwhelming, time for me (Rob is as laid-back and cool as ever!) We're praying, though, that God will take care of every detail so that we can easily transition into a new home and new life together. I can't believe how smoothly things have worked out to this point... isn't HE good?!

Wedding Stuff

We're making progress! We now have a florist, photographer, dj, dress, tuxes, and a wedding website! Check out Rob & Jess and leave us a message!
Also- we don't know what song we want to dance to yet. We're open to votes or suggestions from friends! Only 76 days to go!!!

Still smiling

The wedding plans are all falling into place, and I'm still giddy! Probably once a day I look at Rob and say, "Hey! Guess what? WE'RE GETTING MARRIED!" I don't know if I've ever been this happy!
We've had a productive first few weeks of engagement. We've already booked the church and reception hall, which is a big relief... everything else feels like minor details. My mom asked the other day what my priority is- food? cake? photographer? I answered "the marriage license!" As long as we get that, I'm sure it won't matter what we eat or what songs we dance to!
We also went to Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond and registered. I've heard other people say that registering was a stressful process, but we had a lot of fun! And we're open to "registry audits" if you look at it and think there's something else we should add!
An added bonus... I put together a mini-photo album on Facebook, which I think you can access by clicking this link: Jess & Rob

Happy, Happy... Joy, Joy

So... I can't really beat around the bush--

ROB AND I ARE ENGAGED!

Last week when I wrote that we were going to New Orleans for the weekend, he was already scheming to make sure that I would never forget it. Before we ever left, my mom told me that she & my dad had a wedding to go to in the French Quarter on Saturday, and she suggested that Rob & I go down there too, and spend the afternoon walking around while they were at the wedding. It sounded like a fun plan to me, and that's just what we did.

We went to Cafe du Monde and had beignets and coffee, strolled through the French Market, browsed through a few shops and galleries, and walked up & down the streets all around the Quarter- it was a georgeous day to be out and about! We decided to go down to the Riverwalk, since I hadn't been there in years. After a little while there, Rob was ready to leave (he'd just scoped out the perfect place and was ready to ask the big question). We walked back towards Spanish Plaza, and I suggested that we get someone to take our picture in front of the big fountain there, which he readily agreed too. After our quick photo-op, Rob took my hand and led me a few steps away, out of earshot of the kids who'd just taken the picture. He turned me towards him and said a few really sweet things (that I'll keep to myself). Honestly, I just thought he was in a good mood- it didn't occur to me that he was about to drop to one knee and ask me to marry him, and that's exactly what happened! I was laughing and crying all at the same time, and I think I asked him "What are you doing?!" and as I bent down to hug him and say YES, a woman standing nearby realized what was happening and she started screaming. As we stood up, still hugging each other, everyone around cheered and clapped for us. It was so much fun!!! (The first picture is right after I said Yes!)

We met back up with my mom and dad shortly after that, and celebrated over dinner (they both knew Saturday morning that we would have cause to celebrate that night!)I don't think my feet have touched the ground since...

Funny side note- Rob had a moment of panic in the Nashville airport when he was stopped at security to have his backpack searched. He'd had enough fore-thought to write "Engagement Ring!" on one of his business cards in his pocket, and he was able to secretly show that to the TSA agent before they started pulling everything out of his bag- including my ring! Even so, he said he was racking his brain for the right words, just in case he had to propose right there on the spot in the security line. It still would have made for a great story, but I'm glad he was able to wait!

I've said before that I think I'm the luckiest girl in the world- now I KNOW that I am!!! I've got the love of an incredible man, a beautiful ring on my hand, and 92 days to wait all my dreams come true! It's going to be an unforgettable summer!!!

Fun Stuff

PAST
I meant to tell you sooner-- one of our last big events at the BCM was a Pie Auction. It wasn't what you expect though... the winner of each auction item had the option to take their pie home to enjoy, OR smash the pie into the face of whoever brought it!! All of our leaders and staff participated, and we raised over $2000! Yes, even I got a face full of coconut cream pie, but I'm pretty proud that I brought in the biggest purse at $270! I got to smash one too- you should try it sometime. It's so much fun!
PRESENT
God has given me a unique ministry opportunity here in Nashville. I was praying about where He wanted me to serve Him, and I heard about Kajal. She's about 4 1/2 years old, from India, and blind; she was brought to Nashville about six weeks ago for surgery to hopefully restore her sight. What an amazing girl! I've started spending one night each week with her and her prospective adoptive family, just offering an extra pair of adult hands to her busy mom. There's so much I want to tell you about Kajal... she loves to sing and swing, and LOVES dancing (spinning around and clapping!), and she's SO much fun to be around! Last night, she did the coolest thing... as soon as I got to their house, "Auntie Jess- color", so I found a coloring book and some markers. Kajal took the marker and carefully ran the tip along the edge of her hand on the paper. "Oh great- what a mess," I thought, "is it really a good idea for a blind girl to be playing with markers?" Then Kajal picked up another marker without a cap, which of course made no mark on the paper. She turned to me and said, "It's dry!" I was amazed- how did she know that?!? Then I realized that she was using her left hand to feel the dampness of the ink on the paper as she colored. Wow- what a smart girl!!! Please pray for Kajal- for her eyes to see again. Jesus used mud and spit to restore a blind man's sight- surely he can use today's medical advances to do it again! Also pray for her adoptive mom- Karthi, dad- Blair, brother- Elijah, and sister- Davey Joy- they're going through some big transitions lately.
FUTURE
I'm going back to New Orleans this weekend... I can't wait to see my family, meet my friend Shannon's twins Chloe Rose and David Michael (born last week), and eat some crawfish! I can't wait!!!

Go into all nations...

I got to see God do some pretty incredible things this past year at UAB, one of the greatest being the development of a heart for the nations among the students in that ministry. The BCM has sent out summer missionaries in the past, but this summer we're sending students out to six of the seven continents!! (Apparently, the need for workers in Antarctica isn't that great!) This is a really big deal for us- ten percent of our students will be serving God through missions for all or part of their summer!
Their journeys begin today- two of our guys are on their way to India as I write this. I'm excited for these students, to see their passion for the Lord, and I can't wait to hear all their stories as they return and learn how God used them and what He's teaching them.
Pray for Amanda, Andrew, Casey, Daniel, Dusti, Josie, Laura Beth, Lindsay, Sybil, Teresa, Tori, and Will. They will be serving in Australia, China, Germany, India, Peru, Serbia, Swaziland and the US. (all in alphabetical order- can't mention who's going where- God knows though) Declare HIM fearlessly, my friends!

New Month, New Job, New Home

Happy May Day!!!
It's been a full day for me- I started my new job AND got the keys and began moving into my new apartment!
My last week in Birmingham was incredible. God confirmed for me again that Birmingham was exactly where I was supposed to be this past year, and I'm so grateful for the time I had there. I was blessed to serve a fantastic group of students alongside three wonderful co-laborers. On my last night at the BCM, I was given a scrapbook full of letters... those letters don't represent anything that I did, but the work of Christ in the lives of students at UAB. My heart was touched, though, that they thought to share with me how God changed them over the past 12 months (and I cried like a baby as I read them!) Wow- thank you, Lord, for letting me be a small part of Your work at the University of Alabama- Birmingham.
As for now, I'm liking my new job (at least, I think so after one day!) I'm training to be a project manager with a company that sells & distributes doors to commercial builders. I'm working in the national accounts department, which means that I'll be working with general contractors building new stores for Kroger, Office Depot, Hobby Lobby, and Petco- just to name a few. It's a TON of stuff to learn, and it will definitely be a challenge, but I'm excited about it.
Before I forget- here's my new address... write it in your address books in pencil, though! It's only temporary, for the summer. Hopefully I'll have a more permanent address to share with you in August.
(email me if you want it! I'm not dumb enough to post it here!)
The best part of my new apartment- besides the dishwasher and pool- is its proximity to Rob. We've now gone from living 200 miles apart to just 2 minutes apart!! (I'm just kidding- I'll take him over a dishwasher any day!!)
I also wanted to let you know that you can now "subscribe" to my blog! When you enter your email address, you'll receive automatic email updates whenever I write a new update. The emails aren't instant, but you'll get the text of my blog straight to your inbox without having to check back to my homepage. When you subscribe, you'll have to enter a "code" of random letters, and then you'll get an email from the "Feedburner" service that you must reply to in order to confirm your subscription. Maybe this will help prompt me to update my blog more often!! So sign up!
God is abundantly good...

Test post, take 2

Is anyone getting email about new posts? I got nothing!! I'm beginning to wonder if I set this up wrong... Just trying again!

Monday, April 23, 2007

Test post

It just occurred to me that I could subscribe myself to see what happens when people are "subscribed" to the blog... what kind of email do they send you? How long does it take? Etc, etc. So, for you four other subscribers- don't surprised if this post is here and then it's gone- i'll probably delete after my test run. Thanks for being my guinea pigs, though, and taking a risk on something new!!

Gainfully employed!

I got the job!!! Interviewed last Monday, got the offer on Friday, and accepted it today to make it official- I'll be the newest National Accounts team member at the Girtman Group, Inc. in Nashville. If you check out their website, you might notice that it's all about doors... yes, I'm venturing over to the foreign (to me) world of commercial construction. Don't laugh- I'm not kidding! I'm really excited about the new challenges that will come with this position, not to mention the opportunities to learn a TON of new things! Don't worry, I won't be building or installing, or even selling doors. I'll be working with the general contractors to find out what they need, when they need it, make sure everything is where it's suppossed to be on time, etc. in a project manager role. I really am looking forward to jumping into something new.
And please don't see this as a walk away from ministry either. There were no full-time positions available with any of the Nashville Baptist Campus Ministries, so I eagerly looked for a job that would put me into contact with real-world lost people on a daily basis. I'm also excited about the chance to fully dive into serving my church- something that is difficult when your job is a full-time ministry. I think this is going to be a good change for me.
I can't believe how quickly my time in Birmingham is coming to a close. The semester here ends Wednesday, and my new job begins on May 1...

Subscribe!

This is definitely still a work in progress, but I think (hope!) you can now get email updates every time I update the blog (this one- the page you're reading). If you enter your email address on the right, you will be added to a list that automatically receives an email when I put up a new post. Once I'm sure, or at least a little sure, that it's working, I'll send out a mass email. But, if you're one of the faithful few who still check this page every now and then to see if I've updated yet, you can be one of the lucky ones to sign up first and help me test this new feature!
Aside from spending a little too much time on the computer today, life is hectic but good! I went ahead and had my cable cut off last week in an attempt to save a little money and make myself more productive. So far I think it's working! There's a lot to do as the semester quickly races to the finish line... I wouldn't change a thing though. I'm trying to enjoy every minute I can with my students before they all head off for the summer and I pack up and move again. I love this journey!
PS- If anyone reads this before April 16, please pray for me as I interview for a job in Nashville Monday morning (8:30 cst)! I know that God has a plan already arranged for me, which may or may not include this position, but I'm still really nervous!

In Love, and Loving Spring!

I still think summer is probably my favorite season, but so far this has been an AWESOME spring!! The weather has been absolutely amazing, Birmingham is beautiful with flowers everywhere, and I'm just really happy!
I hope you were able to keep up with me and my team during our trip to Thailand a few weeks ago. We left our sweatshirts behind and headed into the 85+ degrees of Pattaya, Thailand (and I LOVED it!) It was an amazing trip!!! You can check out our team blog (link below) if you haven't already and read about all that God did while we were there.
After I got back, Spring fever was running high! I've been doing a lot of my one-on-one meetings with the girls at UAB on the local walking trail or in the park. I think this week I might move to the botanical gardens! Last Saturday, Rob and I bought kites and took his dog, Buster, to a huge park in Nashville. It was almost a too perfect day-- sunny and warm, with a gentle enough breeze to keep things from being too hot, and just enough to tease you into thinking you might be able to fly a kite! It wasn't exactly optimal kite-flying conditions, but we sure had lots of fun trying!
I've actually been spending a lot of time in Nashville this year, and am planning to move there in May after the school year ends. I love UAB, and I'm going to miss "my girls" there a ton, but as my supervisor says, "Love is pulling me away"! Rob and I have been dating for nearly a year, and we're ready to finally live in the same state! I found an apartment and am currently looking for a job. (Please pray for success in that!) I'm really excited about this transition and can't wait to see what all God has in store for me, and for us together. I'm a lucky girl!!
Ok, enough computer time! I've got the day off, and there's no way I'm going to stay inside and miss out on the sunshine! I think I'll go for a walk...

Thailand

Seriously, I cannot believe I'm leaving in less than 5 days for Thailand! I'm SO not ready, and I've got a ton to do before we go!! Please be in prayer for Tiffany, Sybil, Doug, Craig, and me this week as we prepare.
Check out our team blog! We hope to update it daily while we're gone March 10-18.

Vegas or Bust!

Nashvegas, that is!! I came one step closer to becoming a Nashvillian this weekend... I went to a show at the Grand Ole Opry! It was so much fun! Rob and I were online Saturday evening looking for something cool to do that night, and when he saw that Allison Krauss was playing at the Opry that night, he was sold. We also got to see John Waite, Jimmy Dickens, Porter Wagoner, Ricky Skaggs, and a surprise performance by Vince Gill. There was also a new band, Blue County, that we both really liked. Our night was topped off by some SkeeBall, basketball, and motorcycle racing at Dave & Busters! 10 points for Rob for a fun Saturday night Date Night!!
I'm learning a lot about Nashville, and I'm starting to be able to get around a little easier by myself. I need to share something that frustrates me though... there's a street through downtown Nashville- Demonbreun. I've passed the sign on the interstate several times now, and I always thought it would be pronounced "DEE-mon-BREW-in". Rob got a good laugh at that, and enjoyed correcting me that proper Nashville pronunciation is "dee-MUM-bree-in". MUM?!? That doesn't make sense, and I'm the one who got laughed at! I guess I probably can't say much, since my hometown has Tchopitoulas Avenue.

The Best Job Ever

Yeah, I have it (the best job ever, that is). I love working with the girls at the BCM- they're so much fun!

We went to a state-wide girls retreat this weekend... what a trip! Good music, good teaching, good times, good memories! They are a picture-taking group of girls, that's for sure. They must have spent an hour Friday night posing all over the cabin taking silly pictures and funny pictures and serious pictures... I just laughed with them! Friday night they watched "Pride & Prejudice", and even though I didn't go (I was hanging out in our cabin with my girls), I applaud the retreat planners for choosing the best girly movie of the decade! Saturday's activity time included a mini-spa, ride on the zip line, and a nap for me. It was a great retreat!

Adding to my resume'...

I've got a few new skills to list- soot/smoke removal and demolition specialist! I got to work with Rob this weekend on a couple of different jobs, and see just how intense ServPro really is!! Instead of a Friday night date, we worked together in the bathroom of a house that caught fire. Rob cut out the drywall while I ripped up the floor. He was hesitant to let me in the house at all- I had to remind him not to think of me as a delicate flower but as a tough crew member, ready to work! It was actually a little fun and somewhat therapeutic. In that house, I also helped tear down the living room walls and pulled out insulation. Saturday and Sunday I assisted on some moisture checks of a flooded house, moved about 70 boxes of stuff that was pulled from a smoked out storage unit, and helped clean some of the smokey items.
It was good for me to see what all Rob does on a daily basis. I learned that ServPro is about a lot more than extracting water and cleaning carpets. Now knowing what kinds of things he encounters and deals with, I'll probably worry about him a lot more, but it's also got me praying for him even more too. It wasn't exactly what I would call a relaxing, restful weekend. I got to spend time with Rob, though, and that's always good! (We did go on a date Saturday night... dinner at The Acorn in Nashville's West End-- wow!!!)
Though it may be a short week, I'll be busy in a crazy way... It's ok. I love my students at UAB, so I don't mind the chaos too much! Happy Monday everyone!

Happy 2007!!!

Welcome to another new year! I can't believe it's already 2007... ten years since I graduated high school (yikes!) Man, I feel old! The holidays were great, but I'm actually a little happy that they're over and life is moving on now... on with the show!
A few years ago, a friend shared with me her New Years tradtion- rather than make a list of resolutions, she makes a list of things she's thankful for. I've done lists of 100, but for the sake of time & space, I think I'll just do 27, to celebrate 2007... What things from 2006 are you thankful for?

1. Robert Moore Dixon- the best thing that happened to me in 2006
2. My family- they've put up with me for 27 years
3. Good health- my body isn't perfect, but I'm alive and thankful to be walking around
4. Jesus- no explanation needed
5. My ministry at UAB- I love my job!
6. My girls at UAB
7. My job at Starbucks- health insurance is valuable
8. Mexican food
9. I didn't have to go to school in 2006- and I'll always have two degrees
10. A nice, safe apartment to live in
11. Omar, my reliable car
12. Courtney and Shannon- my friends who've stayed close since college
13. Julie, Lorie, Tracy, Margo, and Amy- my friends who've stayed close since Prague
14. Carrie, Kari, Megan, Erin, and all the girls I'm blessed to call my friends
15. Technology- cell phones & email that allow me to stay in touch with my friends
16. Sunshine in December- or any day for that matter!
17. Flip flops
18. Freedom to read my Bible and tell people about it, whenever and wherever I want
19. Music- singing in my car makes me happy

Sometimes wishes come true!

Well, the verdict is in... I get to start "weaning" myself of the boot and replace it with a NEW New Balance running shoe a couple of hours each day, building up to being boot-free by next week! Two shoes for Christmas... Yay!!!

Other things on my Christmas list...
1. a white Christmas
2. world peace
3. Jesus Christ, the whole point of Christmas, to be known by all peoples

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:11

Merry Christmas!

Broke down

Yesterday was "one of those days"... First, I found out my foot was broken, and then my car's brakes! I was on the verge of tears more than once- not a great Monday.

So, I told you a few weeks ago about running the Race for the Cure. I didn't feel like it was important to tell you at the time that my foot was killing me the whole time. I've been having issues with my right foot for a while, but I haven't exactly been dilligent about following up with doctors, so I've just been dealing with it. After the race, I decided to try another doc and get to the bottom of the problem. It turns out I have a stress fracture in my fourth metatarsal. They shot my foot full of cortisone told me I'd get to wear a lovely black boot for 5-8 weeks. Fun times!! It's more of an inconvenience than pain. Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is my right shoe back!

Fall is Here!

I love fall! I usually say that summer is my favorite season, but there's just something about the smell of fall that can't be mimicked. The air is cooler, and everything smells good & crisp. Wierd? Maybe, but I'm ok with that! (What can I say, smells trigger lots of memories for me!) Other fall favorites-- college football, boots, fires, scarfs...
I also have to say that I'm living in a beautiful part of the country. There aren't all the hills with different colors of trees in Louisiana or Texas! I've been spending a lot of time in Nashville lately, and Tennessee is a very pretty state, especially this time of year. The three hour drive between Birmingham and Nashville has actually been pretty nice... I've had some great time in the car praising God for His incredible creation! (I also had a fun trip to Knoxville a few weekends ago- got to see some great football between the Vols and my Tigers! I hated for Rob that his team lost that weekend, but I love seeing LSU win... Geaux tigers!!!) Anyway, all that to say, Tennessee and Alabama are good places to visit in fall, and I highly recommend it if you have the chance. I know a great place to stay in Birmingham! (wink, wink).

Big Time Catching Up

Ok, now you all know- I'm a horrible blogger! (as if I had to tell you that!) I honestly didn't realize until just now that it's been a whole month since my last real post... I know "I'm really busy" is a lame excuse, but really- I am!!! Here is the Cliff Notes version of what's been going on with me. Feel free to ask for more details on anything...

UAB HOMECOMING

I went to my first (and only, thus far) UAB football game on Homecoming weekend. I was pretty impressed by their activities throughout the week- decent parade, good bonfire/ pep rally, tailgating. Now, the students shocked me when they said the tailgate party started THREE hours before kickoff... only three?? That stuff starts on Friday night in Baton Rouge! But this is Birmingham, and it was still fun- Just on a different level from what I'm used to. And we beat Troy... GO BLAZERS! (The picture is of me & Teresa at the game)

RACE FOR THE CURE
I ran in my first 5K race a couple of weeks ago- the Birmingham Race for the Cure. Yup, you read right-- I ran/jogged the WHOLE way!! It wasn't a competetive speed by any means, but I beat my goal time by 4 minutes, and that was pretty exciting! I have to say- that's an amazing event that the Susan G. Komen Foundation puts on. Thousands of people out there rallying around a good cause- and everything was PINK! Can it get much better?!?! I was inspired by all the survivors walking around in special pink t-shirts, and as I thought and prayed for women with breast cancer along the route, I found the motivation to keep running. My friend Doherty ran the whole way with me, cheering me along. Believe it or not- that picture was taken just after we crossed the finish line. We don't even look tired! That's a scary disease, and I'm grateful for my good health. A cool bonus for the day: I won a $100 door prize gift certificate from Coldwater Creek! (got a fun new jean jacket, nice computer bag, and cookbook for that one)
Celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month in October... buy pink M&Ms!!

GIRLS' NIGHT IN
I had a bunch of girls from the BCM over for a totally girly girls' night... pizza, painting toenails, and Pride & Prejudice. I think we could have quoted the entire movie between all of us! It's definitely one worth watching over & over again. (Rob is incredible and absolutely my #1 guy- but Mr. Darcy is a close second!)

WE LOVE THE 80s COSTUME PARTY
Now, I love my students at UAB, but I was a little disappointed in their so-called 80's enthusiasm. I mean, they didn't even know who Alex P. Keaton was!!! They came up with some really good costumes though. My favorites: Rainbow Bright, Jane Fonda, Marty McFly and Care Bears. I went as Molly Ringwald- not so Pretty In Pink. The disappointment lingered, though, when all the girls oohed over my teased bangs-- and asked me how I did it!! All those mornings in the bathroom & cans of hairspray back in the 80s & early 90s led to a hideous costume... gosh, all that experience actually came in handy! I can't believe I used to do that to myself on purpose every day!

ROB & ME
I couldn't write an update and leave him out! We've been able to see each other a lot lately (which may have contributed to my lack of posts!), and that's been awesome. He took me out for a great date night to celebrate our 6 month anniversary... dinner at PF Changs, then take-out pie from Johnny Ray's and back home to watch SEC football! Last weekend, we went to a bonfire & hayride with some of his high school friends and had a great time... I love smores!
Rob's big news- all systems are go for him to purchase the business he's been looking at in West Nashville. He's going to be operating a flood & fire damage restoration franchise. God has given him a great vision for the ministry opportunities that will come along with this, and I'm really excited for him! Please keep him in your prayers as he prepares for this new endeavor (he's in training right now and will take over in mid-December).

Thanks Gloria and Amy for keeping me accountable on the blogging. I promise- I'm trying to get better!!

Update coming soon

I promise to write an update (or several) by the end of the week... a lot has been going on that I want to tell you about, but I haven't had time to stop and type it all out!!!

Stuff

I had a fun weekend! I went up to Nashville to spend the weekend with Rob & his parents. On Saturday, he took me to my first University of Tennessee football game at Neyland Stadium. Despite the drenching rain, we had a really good time! I may be in danger for admitting this in a public forum, but I ended up buying a bright orange t-shirt, and even sang "Rocky Top" a few times! Honestly, I love SEC football in general, so I knew it would be good. Don't worry, though- the Vols will ALWAYS take a backseat to my beloved Tigers!! A bit of irony for the day- a UT professor was giving a lecture that afternoon before the game on the "water shortage crisis" in America... funny topic on a day when it rained 4-5 inches on the field before the game started! If we had had a bucket, we could have helped him with that crisis!!
On Sunday, we went to Grace Community Church. When Rob & I were both overseas, GCC sent a team of volunteers to lead worship for all the missionaries in our region during our annual meeting. It was such a neat church, and even though I'd never been there before, it brought back lots of memories. I miss Prague...
God is so good to me; He constantly reminds me that He is in control, and His plan is so much better than anything I could dream up. Last week, one of the students asked me how I ended up in college ministry after being called to international missions. As I thought about the journey I've been on the past few years, I realized how different that path looks compared to what I had mapped out. My calling is to the Lord, to follow Him in obedience- not to a specific place or even type of ministry. That in and of itself has led me on an incredible ride! Don't be afraid to follow Him because of where He might take you...

Tired, but still happy

Did I really say I was going to put up a new post every week? What was I thinking?! And who out there was crazy enough to actually believe me??? Gotcha!!!
It's been a good couple of weeks. Starbucks is running full-speed ahead, and getting busier every day (which I love, by the way). It's got its challenges, but I guess every job does.
The BCM keeps me running around when I'm not making lattes. With the good, the bad, and the ugly- I still think it could be the perfect job for me. My favorite part is absolutely my weekly meetings with the girls. In addition to the regularly scheduled ones, I usually end up having several spontaneous meetings too, and those are just as much fun. Yesterday I got to go with a group of students to build a sidewalk/ramp at the home of a less-fortunate family. It was hard work, but I know more about concrete than I ever thought I would! Don't get me wrong, it's not all easy; I'm being streched in lots of different directions and learning a ton in the process, and that's great no matter how dificult.
God continues to teach me a lot in my personal times with him, too. Last week, after reading in the book of Numbers, Rob and I were talking about chapter 22, when Balaam's donkey turned around and spoke. We both agreed that we hoped we would never be so stubborn that God had to use an animal to speak to us!
Please keep praying for my ministry to the students at UAB. I am so grateful when you lift us up!
(And thanks to those of you who have commented or emailed me about the blog... I was wondering if anyone still reads it!)

What a week!

It has been a whirlwind week in my little corner of the world, and I've loved every minute of it! I was thinking this morning that I should have re-instated my old updates before venturing into this new ministry at the BCM, but I didn't, so I'm thinking about using the blog instead. My goal is to have at least a weekly update every Sunday... hold me accountable!
School started this week at UAB. I spent a lot of time on campus, meeting with students and attending welcome-week events. I've got 11 girls that I'll be meeting with weekly, and was somehow able to schedule all 11 last week without any schedule conflicts. It's a lot, but they're a great group of girls and I'm having fun with it! We had our first Thursday-night worship at the BCM with 160-180 students! (That's nearly double what they averaged last year) I only hope we can keep that momentum.
And as if I didn't have enough going on, Starbucks finally opened this week too! Wednesday and Thursday we had pre-opening "Friends & Family" days, and the big day was Friday. It's going really well so far, and I'm enjoying meeting our new regular customers.
Saturday I got a special delivery at work- a huge bouquet of yellow & white daisies (my favorite flowers!)- from my favorite Tennessean... I love surprises like that! Isn't he great?
I'm so grateful for all that God is doing in my life. I know that all these good things are a result of His work, not mine. I'm just happy that I get to be a part of it!
You can be praying for several things this coming week... Monday I'll be going to Birmingham Southern College to meet students and spread the word about a weekly Bible study we'll be starting there. Thursday, I'll lead the first in a series of four freshmen Bible studies before our regular weekly worship- ask God to speak through me to reach the new students at UAB. Also remember worship Thur. night and all the student-led Bible studies that are starting on campus this week. And to finish the week, I'll get to drive home to Louisiana next Friday to spend the weekend with my family.
Let me hear from you sometime.... I miss ya'll!

Step 1

They say the first step in battling an addiction is admitting you have a problem. So, I'm going to start with that right here. I'm addicted to 24, the tv series. It's a pretty intense show: 24 episodes per season, 1 hour per episode, each hour representing one hour in "the longest day of Jack Bauer's life". So basically, at the end of the season, you've seen what happened all 24 hours of a single day for a federal counter-terrorist agent.
I watched ALL 24 hours this past weekend!!!
Now, to cover myself a little, with no commercials, each hour is actually only about 40-45 minutes. AND, I had a mild case of food poisoning on Monday, so I wasn't going anywhere anyway. But yes, I watched season 1 in its entirety between Saturday afternoon and Monday night. I think anyone who's ever seen the show will probably sympathize with me, and understand what I went through. I'm addicted just the same though.

Happy

Rob came to visit this weekend, and we had a really good time. Friday night, we had dinner with Julie & Gary- friends who are getting ready to head to the mission field in a couple of weeks (Julie was the first one to suggest that Rob & I should get together a few years ago). Saturday we went to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens in the morning (beautiful and very peaceful... maybe my new favorite place in B'ham), and to Megan & Bret's wedding that afternoon (we went on our first double date with them back in April!). And Sunday we went to church at Shades Mountain- where half the youth group (or so it seemed) had been recruited by Rob to go to Union... he was the most popular visitor there!
Megan was a beautiful bride, and by far, the calmest one I've ever seen!! When I went in to see her before the wedding, there was no rocking, no pacing, no tears- she was just ready to become Mrs. Bret Golson! I was honored to go in and pray with Megan Smith one last time before her name changed. I love you, girl, no matter what your name is!! AND- I caught my first ever wedding bouquet at the reception! I have to be honest, I wasn't looking to catch it, and even placed myself behind a little girl thinking she would grab it for sure, but somehow it ended up in my hand. It was fun, though, and I've been enjoying the pretty pink roses! Everyone should have fresh flowers in their home- they make everything a little better, and who doesn't smile when they get flowers? Bring flowers to someone tomorrow!!
My old roommate Erin came to visit and go to the wedding too. We had a great time catching up Saturday night in the dark (my electricity was out for about 15 hours). My heart was encouraged after our talk, maybe not by the words that were exchanged, but more by God reminding me of some simple truths that came up while we were talking. I was reminded of the huge responsibility that I have as a college minister; and the awesome joy that comes with leading them closer to the Lord. It's not about me.
But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me. Psalm 13: 5-6

I'm turning into a college student!!!

Look out.... I joined myspace AND facebook-- all in the same week!!! I'm hoping this will get me some big-time cool points at the BCM!

Life is full of Surprises

It was my turn to drive up to see Rob this weekend, so I decided to go a day early and surprise him. I had to make some phone calls and do a little detective work to track him down once I got to Jackson, but I managed to get to Union just as Rob was walking out to his car. He was calling me on the phone when he looked up and saw me in the parking lot... it was fun watching him!
We had kind of a low-key weekend, which was just what we both needed. We went to a baseball game for a little while Friday night (we didn't stay because it was HOT as Hades!), ran some errands and did a little yard work, played a game, watched a movie... It was great just to relax!
The baseball game was the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx vs. the Mongomery Biscuits. Yup- the biscuits! There's a fierce opponent for you! Tough teams or not, it was fun to go out to the game for a while.
Sunday evenings are always the worst part of the weekend. It's not the drive, but the goodbye that always stinks.
And today was Monday again; back to work... it's a good thing I love my job!

The coolest day in Birmingham- so far

Yesterday was definitely unique, and by far, the coolest day I've had since I moved to Birmingham two months ago!
I went to the Gardens at Park Place in downtown Birmingham with two friends from work, Alyssa & Doherty. The garden was started by Jones Valley Urban Farms on a full city block, and will soon have small plots available for sale or lease where local people can plant and take care of their own gardens. Anyway, the whole block was planted with sunflowers and yesterday the public was invited to a block party in the garden. It was a free event, complete with fresh lemonade, hay rides, and pick-your-own sunflowers! Alyssa, Doherty, and I wandered through the field of sunflowers for about an hour and each collected a big bouquet of flowers.
It was so much fun!!
After our adventure at the farm, we went to eat at Jim & Nicks, a local bar-b-que joint, in Southside. YUM!! Then we came back to my apartment and just hung out and talked, which sounds pretty uneventful, but it was a good time of encouragement. We decided that we definitely need to find more cool, free things like this to do in Birmingham!

I'd like you to meet Rob...

If you're reading this blog, there's a really good chance you're an important person in my life (because my stuff isn't interesting enough for random strangers to bother), and I want everyone in my life to know someone who has recently become extra special to me. This is Rob. =) He's thoughtful, very funny, ambitious, missions-minded, and extremely kind-hearted.
We met four years ago when we were both living in Europe (he was in Romania while I was in the Czech Republic). Since we both worked for the IMB, we met several times at different meetings & events. Even back then, I knew he was an incredible guy, but I never thought we'd ever be in the same place at the same time, so I didn't let myself spend much time thinking about "us". After we both came back to the US, we emailed every few months or so and kept in touch off & on.
Then in December, Rob sent me an instant message on the computer, and, in the few minutes we chatted that day, realized that it had been months since we'd last talked. We exchanged phone numbers, "and so it all began"... (The first time we talked on the phone, my roommate Erin came in and demanded to know who I was talking to as soon as I hung up- "You're smiling like a fool- that was a guy, wasn't it?!") I haven't stopped smiling since then!
The first time we got together, it had been three years since we'd been face-to-face. It was great, and we decided that weekend that we definitely wanted to continue seeing each other! He lives in Jackson, TN, so that doesn't happen nearly as often as I'd like, but it gives me something to look forward to on weekends. (and it's a lot easier now that I'm three hours closer!)
So there's the cliff notes edition of "Rob & Jess". He's amazing, and I think the world of him (in case you haven't noticed!) When I asked him if there was anything he wanted me to say here, he said I could let you all know that he eats green beans "socially" but he doesn't really like them, so please don't serve them if we come for dinner!
** This picture was taken this past weekend at Rob's (now former) roommate's wedding... congrats Ben & Tabitha!

Sweet Home Alabama

Southern accents are not all the same. Alabamians do not sound the same as Georgians, and I've had to remind myself several times- "I live in Alabama now." I'm still getting used to saying that. Not that it's bad! Just different.
I'm finally starting to settle in. I've unpacked all the boxes (and put almost everything away). I still need to find a couch, and I'm pretty sure that will help my apartment feel more like a home. It's small and cozy, though, and I really like where I'm living. It's mostly fun finding my way around a new city... a little lonely sometimes, but I'm sure that will change soon. Work has been good so far; I'm filling in temporarily at a different Starbucks until my new store opens. And I'm slowly meeting the students from the BCM, and they're all great. It's fun!
Relocating to Birmingham was definitely a good move; I'm thankful that God opened this door. I'm in a cool new town, closer to my family, closer to Rob... (for those of you thinking, "who is Rob?!?!"- he deserves his own blog introduction, and I promise that one will be next after I get a few new pictures this weekend!) Life is good.

T minus 3 and counting...

It's about "that" time again... the boxes are packed, tomorrow is my last day of work, the goodbyes have started... must be time to move! Takeoff-- this Friday.
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:
a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace...

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
I always feel like I should be used to moving, that it should be easy, but it never is. Sure, I'm getting better at packing every time, but I'm still not good at goodbyes. I tried to maintain a safe distance here, and not let myself get too attached. Ha! I, the ultimate social butterfly, not get attached? Mission- impossible! I'm leaving behind some incredible people, and can only pray that you are better off because we briefly walked this road of life together. I'm going to miss you!!
I'm excited about the road ahead too! I am moving into a cute little apartment in the Mountain Brook area of Birmingham (since this is a public domain, I'm not putting my new address here- contact me if you want it!). I am looking forward to working at a brand new Starbucks from the initial set-up and grand opening. And I can't wait to get involved with the ministry at UAB! I'm anxious to start meeting with students and just "do life" with them. It's going to be a fun, exciting ride!

Another big change

Drumroll please..........
I got a job!! I actually knew about this a couple of weeks ago, but it wasn't until yesterday that I finally got all the details worked out and "went public" with the news.
I'm moving again-- this time to Birmingham, AL. I'll be going on staff with the BCM at the University of Alabama- Birmingham. I'm SO excited that God finally brought this about, and I'm looking forward to see all that He is going to do. This transition has been in the making for a while (see entry "Sign from God?", Nov 2005) and I'm thrilled that it's finally come full circle. It's going to be a fun job- I'll get to mentor the girls who are involved with the ministry, lead Bible studies, and encourage them to see God's bigger picture by going on international missions trips. I can't wait to get started!
I'm also going to keep working part-time at Starbucks. In Birmingham, I'll have the neat opportunity to be part of a "Star Team" and start working in a brand new store before it opens. By doing this, I will get be in on the initial store set-up and training of new workers.
Things are changing fast! I'm hoping to find an apartment and move mid-May so that I'll have a month with the Star Team before the new store's grand opening. I never thought I'd be in Atlanta this long, and now I can't believe that I'm leaving so soon! It's exciting!!
God has been so real lately. I've seen Him at work in every area of my life and the world around me... He is creative... He is kind... He is faithful... He is good.
There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; There is no Rock like our God. 1 Samuel 2:2

Life ain't nothin but a funny, funny riddle...

Thank God I'm a city girl! But going to the country is fun too! I went to Monroe, LA, this weekend and surprised my family at my grandmother's house. It was SO great to see everyone, and a ton of fun to see the shocked looks on their faces when I got there. (My mom & aunt were the only ones who knew I was coming). Everyone was working outside when I got there, spreading dirt around to level out the yard. I visited inside with Mom & Granny for a little while before I volunteered to drive the tractor. There was just something about sitting on a John Deere that made me want to sing a little John Denver! (too bad I only knew two lines!!)
Other exciting news... I went to Birmingham a couple of weeks ago to meet with the BCM director at UAB. We had a great chat, and I'm going back next Wednesday to meet the Alabama state collegiate ministries director. I'm really excited about what God might be doing in this situation. Please pray with me about this meeting at 10:00 on the 15th... Tomorrow is my last day of shift supervisor training at work. And Thursday will be my first official shift in charge- scary! The new responsibilities are a little overwhelming, but it's an exciting new challenge that I'm looking forward to... A final thought for today-- Do you not know that the runners in a stadium all race, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 1 corinthians 9:24

The Verdict

I guess I need to sit here for a few minutes and tell ya'll what I decided about Colorado. After much consideration and prayer, I felt it was best not to move to CO right now. While I had a great time seeing the state and all the work going on out there, I never felt a stirring of the Holy Spirit that that was the place for me. I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed, but I also have peace that this is the right decision right now.
Which means I'm back in Atlanta, hanging out at Starbucks a little while longer. I'm still looking for the place of ministry God has prepared for me. (So if any of you hears of an opening in college ministry- let me know!) It's hard to wait, but I know that God is good, and He who began a good work will be faithful to complete it.

Late night ramblings from 38,000 feet

I’m writing this from 38,669 feet in the air, somewhere over Missouri (according to the little map on the screen). So many thoughts are flying through my head, about as fast as this plane is traveling. It’s been a fantastic weekend! I got to see a lot of new things and new places, and I met some amazing new friends who are working diligently to reach college students all over Colorado.
At first, I thought it would be difficult to process and sort out all that I’ve taken in the past five days. I’ve visited eight campuses in five cities- and there were aspects that I liked, and some that I didn’t, of all of them. I asked a lot of questions, and I still don’t have all the answers.
I guess, ultimately, I don’t want the responsibility of making the decision whether or not I should move to Colorado. I don’t want to organize the past few days and make a fact-based decision. I know that I could join any of the teams I met with and be an asset to their ministry. I don’t think it’s a question of what I CAN do, or even what I WANT to do. I want God to make it perfectly, crystal clear. Sometimes He makes it that easy; other times, not so much. I’m afraid of Him leaving this one up to me. Is it too bold to ask God for a black & white answer? Because I don’t just want to know if I should move to Colorado, but also to which city & which campus. I’m willing to put it all out there.
So now I’m feeling like maybe the whole “processing” procedure shouldn’t be that hard at all. (now 38,748- about to cross the Mississippi river from Arkansas to Tennessee) I mean, I’m thankful for the opportunity to see all the options, and those experiences will help me pray more specifically for the work that’s developing on each campus, but maybe I don’t have to sort out anything.
I don’t often trust my own discernment. I don’t want to throw out a fleece like my good friend Gideon (Judges 6), but we think a lot alike. “If I have found favor in your eyes, God, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me.” (6:17)
Last summer in Kenya, I received a clear object lesson. God promises that His Word will be a light unto our path (not a floodlight into the future, like I often look for). Psalm 119:105. Ok, so Kenya…. There were thorny Acacia trees all over the place, and I was paranoid that I was going to run into one of the branches and stab myself in the forehead. I often wished that I had two flashlights, one for my feet, and one to scan up ahead. But I only had one. I was so nervous about the random trees that I usually ignored the path my feet were on and tried to see what was coming, which resulted in me tripping over a loose rock and gashing open my toe. The lesson: quit worrying about what’s ahead, and pay attention to where you are.
The longer I sit here, the more I think I need to go back to Atlanta, and just pray and wait. Not to process, but to be still, and know that He is God and His name will be exalted among the nations (Psalm 46:10).
I’ve now rambled across five states (33,511 feet) and I’m not entirely sure this will make sense to anyone but me. But here it is.

Colorado is COLD!!!

So I've been in Colorado since Thursday night, and the theme of the trip so far has been "Cold Feet" (and I'm not talking about my nerves!). I sat in one of the retreat sessions yesterday, and never took off my coat OR my mittens! And that was even with thermals under my jeans, 2 undershirts, and 2 pairs of socks!!! Now, there were students running around in t-shirts and flip flops, so maybe it was just me. But I doubt it!!
I've toured around Denver and Colorado Springs so far, and I'm in Boulder now. I've seen Mile-High Stadium, the Garden of the Gods, the Air Force Academy and Chapel, Pikes Peak, and the Flat Irons, and Canadian geese, a prairie dog, and a wolf. It's been a lot of fun, in spite of the harassment I got yesterday from the guys who work in Colorado Springs. (They were driving me around town and said something about Pikes Peak, and I innocently asked, "Which one is that?" Apparently they thought it was obviously the biggest mountain, but they didn't understand that they're all enormous to me!)
Even though it's winter and everything is pretty much brown, it's all beautiful. The landscape is so much different from what I'm used to! The mountains have served as a visual reminder that God is so huge, and I am so small. As I've been praying about whether or not this is where God wants me to serve, I've been overcome by the fact that the same God who created the giant mountains loves me enough to be concerned with the details of my life.

What a wildly wonderful world, God! You made it all, with
Wisdom at your side, made earth overflow with your wonderful creations.
psalm 104:24 (the message)

Please pray with me that God would reveal clearly if this is where He wants me to serve, or if I should continue to wait on Him.

What really matters

I was planning to write an update tonight, and say that I got a cortisone shot in my foot Thursday, and it's still a little swollen, but I think it's going to be fine. It's sore, but it's fine.
And then I got an email from my friend, my sister-in-Christ, Vesta (who also happens to be my former supervisor from our Czech days). Two years ago, two brain tumors were removed from her body. This past week, an MRI revealed two more, and another that had started out small and non-threatening had doubled in size in a year's time. My foot doesn't hurt that much anymore.
I'm filled with questions that no one can answer. But as I talked to my friend Jerod tonight, he reminded me that God works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called by Him (that was before I read Vesta's email). No matter what happens to our physical bodies, God is working in our lives, and that is good. Thanks for the encouraging reminders Jerod- press on.
HE IS the answer... every time... no matter what.
Please pray for Vesta and Mark, for strength to continue to demonstrate God's love and grace as they face whatever the next few days hold. Pray that God will be glorified, and His name made known among the nations.

"Lead-Foot"

Yes, I do have a tendancy to drive fast, but that's not why I was given a new nickname this week. I've been having trouble with my foot (in a physical sense) for a few months, so I finally went to see an orthopedic doctor last week. She sent me for an MRI to see if I had a stress fracture, but the MRI showed a surprise instead! The film showed that I have a small piece of metal imbedded in the bottom of my foot- directly under the joint where I've been having pain. You're probably thinking, "So how in the world did you get metal in your foot? When did this happen?" I have no idea, and I have no idea. Yeah, it's all pretty bizarre (I know that much). I still don't know if there enough of a risk there to require removing the metal, but I'll let you know what happens!
Rhonda, you get the credit for my literal new name, even if you did abandon me to figure out the stationary bikes on my own while you keep trucking along on the ellipticals! Thanks for being my work-out buddy!

New Beginnings for a New Year

Just wanted to let you know what's been going on in my world, and ask you to keep praying. I talked to Max Barnett yesterday (of Colorado Collegiate Ministries) and he asked me to come to Colorado Springs for their statewide retreat Feb 3-5. I'll either go early or stay late to meet with some of the directors of the BCMs and check out the campuses in Colorado Springs and Denver.
I'm really excited about this new development, and I have total peace from the Lord about going in this direction. It's not at all what I was expecting, but I'm anxious to see how God's going to work it all out.
I love My Utmost for His Highest, and God has been speaking plenty of truth through Oswald lately. Two things that stood out to me last week were "You do not know what you are going to do; the only thing you know is that God knows what He is doing" and "God does not tell you what He is going to do; He reveals to you Who He is." (if you have the book, it was Jan 2) I'm reminded that I don't have to know everything ahead of time. God is still God, and will continue to be no matter where I go and what I do.
I'm so amazed that God, the creator of the universe, loves me enough to be concerned with the details of my life, and is gracious enough to continue showing me Who He is in order to work those details out.
Thanks for continuing to pray with me about this!! I'll keep you posted!

I never really liked peaches that much

I cannot believe myself. I'm sitting here in the recliner watching the Peach Bowl on ESPN. Up until a couple of hours ago, I was holding a ticket to this game- which is being played right here in Atlanta! Granted, I'm wearing thermals, fleece pajama pants, and a sweatshirt, cuddled up to a box of Kleenex under a blanket and sipping on OJ, and I couldn't be doing any of these things if I was actually at the game. I definitely would rather be at the Georgia Dome.
Toby, you're an angel in the form of a Tiger-- thanks for sending me the ticket!! I just wish I could have used it!
I brought the ticket to a local sports bar and gave it to the girl at the hostess stand- my New Years gift to one of her friends, or some random fan that was crazy enough to take the ticket and go (I finally gave it up about 2 hours before kickoff!) I hope someone is down there having a good time cheering for LSU.
It stinks to be sick. And it stinks to know that I have to be at work at 5am tomorrow. Most of all, though, it stinks to be a grown up, who let those things influence her into staying home tonight. But the game goes on... Geaux tigers!

You can call me "Master Jess"

Since there's no fancy title to come with my degree, and I KNOW I'll never go for a PhD and become "doctor," I'll settle for being "master"! Hehehe!!!
Graduation was so much fun. I loved being back in Fort Worth, back at Deer Creek, and back among friends. The weekend was better than I could have imagined. It was fun hanging out with so many people who I've been missing.
For now, I'm back in Atlanta at Starbucks while I pray about what God has for me next...

Break out the Pomp & Circumstance

I am proud to announce my graduation from
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary!
During commencement exercises this Friday, December 9,
I will officially receive my
Master of Arts in Missiology.
I would like to thank the academy for this incredible honor.... haha, no- but seriously.
I'm thankful for my parents and my sisters, and my entire family, for their unending support, love, and encouragement. You have graciously stood behind me, no matter how crazy you thought I was, and loved me when you didn't understand me. You're amazing- and I love you so much!
I'm grateful for my seminary friends and classmates, for bringing smiles in the midst of stress. I'm so glad that God allowed me to journey through the past 2.5 years with such fun people.
I'm thankful for my friends who were not in seminary, for reminding me of life "outside the bubble". Thanks for keeping me real!
I thank God for everyone who has prayed for me, carrying me through seminary and over two continents. I'm pretty sure I couldn't have done it without you.
I'm thankful for professors who challenged me, taught me, encouraged me, frustrated me, streched me, and empowered me. I am stronger and more ready to face the world thanks to you.
Thank you God for tears to make the laughter even sweeter, struggles to make the accomplishments more victorious, and for Jesus, who gives meaning to it all.

Choked

So, that just about describes my Tigers. I went to the SEC Championship game last night- sad stuff! (Thanks for the ticket, Kevin!) It was horrible to watch; they didn't bring their A-game, that's for sure. I still had a great time, but it definitely would have been better if LSU had won. I guess one good result is that they're coming back to Atlanta to play in the Peach Bowl...
This past week started off bad, but it turned around. My computer crashed last weekend, but I was able to get my files recovered and turn in all my work for school- and it's done! What a relief to have everything turned in, and know that I won't have to write another paper for a grade. It's a great feeling!

Today's Quote

Lord, help me to do great things as though they were little, since I do them with Your power; and little things as though they were great, since I do them in Your Name.

Now, Lord, what do I wait for?

Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You. Psalm 39:7
I've asked myself this question a lot lately, especially this past week. I feel like God is trying to teach me patience by having me wait, and wait, and wait some more. Seriously, I really thought I would know by now what I'm supposed to do after I graduate. I was nervous about not knowing the future when then end of seminary was months away, and here I sit, three weeks out, and I still don't know. I'm waiting, but I have no idea what for. Can I just be honest, and say that I'm frustrated?
I talked to a friend last night about our communication with God. He knows every thought of our minds, so we don't really need to tell Him when we're upset- He already knows this. But should we? Is it ok? Does God want to hear our grumblings? I shared that I feel guilty when I gripe at God, because I should be happy with whatever circumstance He puts around me. My friend reminded me of King David, that he was miserable throughout much of the Psalms, and he cried out to God, and then he praised Him anyway. I spent a lot of time reading through that book last night and today, and I can say with confidence that my hope is in the Lord, and I will continue to wait for Him.
The Lord is my portion, therefore I will wait for Him. The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks Him. Lamentations 3:24-25
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful- I know that full well. Psalm 139:14

INFP

That's me, or my personality anyway, according to the Myers-Briggs personality profile. Introverted, intuitive, feeling, and perceiving. My roommate, Erin, recently took the survey, and we're identical- she's an INFP too!! Which is really wierd, because less than 1% of the general population has these four qualities. Interesting....
Anyway, she brought home the paper that describes "our" type, and it was fun reading over this purely analytical report that pretty well describes me and the way I respond to the world. I think my favorite was, "INFPs see logic as something optional." Absolutely!! You can read more about INFP types by clicking here.
What are you??
Oswald's inspiring thought for today:
If you are rightly devoted to the Lord Jesus, you have reached the sublime height where no one ever thinks of noticing you, all that is noticed is that the power of God comes through you all the time.
(from Oswald Chambers' My Utmost for His Highest)

Sign from God?

I went to Birmingham, Alabama, for a few days to see some friends, help Julie pick out a wedding dress, and pray about the potential possibility of working at the University of Alabama-Birmingham's Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM).
My friend Megan took me driving around the campus at UAB Friday night. She pointed out most of the buildings and told me what they were, but she didn't know where the BCM was. No biggie, I thought. We parked in a lot for a few minutes and prayed there on the campus, which was wonderfully exhilirating. I didn't get an overwhelming feeling right away that I was in the middle of my new home, but it was a cool campus (in the heart of downtown, which I loved) and I think I could see myself there. Anyway, we went to eat in another area, and on the way home she offered to drive back through the campus again. We stopped to get gas while we were downtown, and at the gas station, there was a homemade poster taped to the light post on the corner. It said "Jessica" in bold green letters and had an arrow pointing down the street. We laughed that maybe God was sending me a sign, but really didn't think about it. Well, I went into the station to use the restroom while Megan pumped gas, and before I left, I asked the girl working inside if she knew where the BCM building was, and randomly enough- she thought she did. She told me to turn at the corner, and even described the building. We went back to the road, and realized the arrow on the sign was pointing down the street where we needed to turn, WHERE THE BCM IS! I can't tell you how big the chill bumps were, or how hard my heart was pounding at that point. I got really excited though, that maybe it wasn't a coincidence for me to finally find that building.
I wish I'd had a camera to prove to everyone else- and myself- that there really was a sign with my name on it! This job is still totally up in the air, but I'm completely excited about the possibility in a new way today. Please pray that it will all work out however it's supposed to.
And by the way- GEAUX TIGERS!!! #4 this week-- fabulous!! Maybe we'll finally get a chance to play USC and regain our national title outright!!

Random thoughts from a friend...

Sermon illustrations sometimes lead our thoughts in funny directions! I got this email from my good friend, Lorie, and have been meaning to share it... (you crack me up, lo! i love you!)

I was sitting in chapel this morning listening to our speaker when he began sharing about Jesus feeding the multitude in John chapter six. He shared how the Lord abundantly blessed the meager offering of fish and bread and allowed it to feed thousands.

However, as I read along with him in the Bible, I noticed that Scripture ONLY mentions that the disciples collected 12 baskets of BREAD left over after the feeding. NO FISH. In other words, those people "tore up" that fish! It must have been fried!

Of course, I found this humerous at a not-so-much appropriate moment!! I hope you all are having a wonderful day!
